The Best Food to Try in the Lake District

The Best Food to Try in the Lake District

As a popular UK tourist destination, there are of course plenty of well-known chains to choose from in the Lake District. However, it’s always good to eat something different and support the independents. Some of the best food to try in the Lake District is without a doubt, those which helped put Cumbria on the culinary map:

Cumberland Sausage

If it’s a wholesome pub lunch you’re after, then the famous Cumberland Sausage is a fine choice. The pork sausage traditionally comes wrapped up in a coil. There won’t be any corners cut on quality either, for the Cumbrian name is it stake! Best served with creamy mash and a nice rich onion gravy on the side.

Cumbrian Lamb

The best food to try in the Lake District doesn’t come much better than this. When you’ve tried Cumbrian lamb, you won’t want to go back. Roast dinners are a firm favourite on any country pub restaurant, especially for that traditional Sunday lunch. If you’re after something special then search for fine dining restaurants near Windermere.

Cartmel Sticky Toffee Pudding

When you’ve finished your roast, be sure to leave some room for dessert. Sticky Toffee Pudding is another British staple, up there with a good old apple crumble. The steamed desert is, in essence, a moist sponge, but the sticky toffee source can transform it to a thing of beauty.

The village shop in Cartmel is said to have some of the best in the whole of Cumbria. Yes, you may be on a detox at a Windermere spa retreat, but that doesn’t mean you have to be healthy ALL the time!

Grasmere Gingerbread

When you think of gingerbread, the chances are you may have memories of childhood and taking little men straight out the oven.

Maybe you helped build something spectacular? Gingerbread houses, after all, are a fun way to show off a more creative side. However, the type of gingerbread we’re talking about here comes from Grasmere. It’s far more crumbly than your standard biscuit.

That said since the 1850’s Grasmere in the Lake District has become well known as the home of gingerbread!

Kendal Mint Cake

As the name suggests, this local delight comes from Kendal. If you have a sweet tooth, then this is one for you. In fact, snacks probably don’t come much more sugary! Made with either white or brown sugar, with a strong peppermint taste. Kendal mint cake is ideal to keep in your pocket when out walking in the Lake District.

Damson Gin

The valleys between Kendal and Lake Windermere are known for their damson orchards. So what better way to utilise the fruit than to create something alcoholic? When you return from a long days walk and return to your spa suite, pour a glass and take a soak in your private hot tub.

Whether you’re looking for additions to your picnic by Lake Windermere, or something to eat at a fine restaurant, Cumbria has it all. Make the most of your holiday and indulge in spa treatments available at the nearby Aphrodite’s Lodge, alternatively just relax in your Windermere hot tub.
